Position Statements: As your state board of education member, I pledge to serve you with the same utmost dedication as I have and continue to; training and working with our amazing educators across the state in best practices for meeting the needs of their students. I pledge to bring community and curriculum standards experience, sound judgment, and know-how to the office as a veteran educator. In my candidacy, I see helpful and positive roles in improving education for all Texas children. I believe in the following values:
In school choice and a parent’s right to educate his or her children at home.
In a strong educational system that promotes higher education opportunities for all our hardworking students and that empowers students to succeed after high school.
In improving our low-income schools through innovative programs through STEM and school choice.
Zip codes should not dictate the quality of education a child receives.
In character and abstinence education as strong vehicles to equip our children in becoming productive citizens in our society.
In improving programs that allow our non-English speaking students accelerate their English language proficiency therefore empowering them to better assimilate and contribute to the American culture.
In higher education savings accounts program that make it possible for any student to attend a four-year college, community college or an alternative program of their choice.
In a customized educational approach in student learning and not a one-size fits all approach.
In support of the Texas constitution in the traditional definition of marriage.
Education is the foundation of our freedom as Americans and the access to a better future.
SBOE District 11 currently lacks community input from all stakeholders. To represent well, a consistent dialogue is essential and necessary. As your voice of representation, I pledge to hold quarterly community forums across Parker, North, South & West Tarrant and far northwest Dallas counties to hear from you. Your inputs become a guidepost for SBOE deliberations.
The major issue currently before the state board of education is creating a new Long-Range Plan for Public Education, which is expected to establish goals for Texas public schools through 2030. One issue that will determine the long range plan is Texas rapid changing demographics. According to the 2016-17 enrollment data, there is an estimated 5,359,127 students enrolled in our public schools; the highest student population been Hispanic students with an enrollment of 2,809,386. This issue will have a domino effect on curriculum standards and making improvement to the current English Language Proficiency Standards to help teachers be more effective in their practice. I commit to contributing my robust expertise with regional service centers, public schools, charter schools, private schools and homeschooling families to ensure a plan that makes education better for all Texas children.
Many of our elementary aged students are not well prepared for secondary grades and hence higher education. I commit to working with fellow members to champion implementing instructional approaches that will ensure all our students have equal opportunity to succeed in secondary grades and beyond. One such instructional approach is the need for a consistent and statewide transition plan that bridges elementary grades to secondary grades to ensure our elementary students are well prepared for the rigor of secondary grades.
Support the strong management of the Permanent School Fund (PSF) which is one of the largest educational endowment in our country. Strong management of PSF is necessary to ensure all Texas children have access to quality and equitable education today and in the future. The management of these funds is a major responsibility of the state board of education. Strong management of PSF also ensures that the funds generated and kept for it's existence and sustenance should not be used in any way to offset any state budget deficit.
